A Microsoft study indicates that about 43% of Brazilians have been involved in a bullying incident in 2020. At a time when debates on the issue and strategies to combat bullying in school environments are intensifying, art can be a key ally to raise awareness, in a playful way, about the importance of respect and good coexistence with diversity.

This is precisely the proposal of the play A Vida de Ben – Os Males do Bullying (Ben’s Life – The Evils of Bullying), a theater play that will be presented on May 18 and 19 to students from schools in the towns of Tupirama, Bom Jesus do Tocantins, and Pedro Afonso, in the state of Tocantins.

Aimed at a young audience, ages 11 and up, the musical play tells the story of Ben, a very shy teenager who is chased by Catinha, Gus, and Tony, simply because he has long hair. The goal is, based on the plot, to alert and make young people and teenagers aware of the damage, trauma, and psychological scars that bullying can cause, promoting reflections that lead them to adopt positive attitudes towards the subject. Through the bullying issue, other debates come to the surface, such as racism, fatphobia, among other prejudices.

The project is carried out by Rekriarte, made possible through the Federal Government’s Culture Incentive Law, and sponsored by BP Bunge Bioenergia.

“The presentations will be excellent opportunities to stimulate the debate about bullying and social coexistence with young people, because they will feature artistic resources, chat among students and teachers, and distribution of comic books with the story of the play. And because it takes place right in the schools, places where young people spend a lot of time together, the initiative is even more relevant for stimulating awareness and creating a safe environment to talk about the subject,” says Mara Pinheiro, Director of Communication and Institutional Relations for BP Bunge Bioenergia.
